The Begawan Biji restaurant in Bali, completed in August 2024, combines the timeless elegance of traditional wantilan architecture with contemporary aesthetics. Designed by blancostudio with the cooperation of Binar Lighting Studio under the lead of Mira Franciska and Tracy Andhini, the project exemplifies a meticulous approach to lighting that enhances both ambience and function.

The lighting design is divided into two distinct zones: the Crown, where subtle uplighting adds a sense of grandeur, and the Body, which employs soft, indirect lighting at eye level to ensure guest comfort. Overcoming challenges posed by the wooden structure, the team collaborated closely with architects to conceal cables, preserving the building’s aesthetic integrity. Another hurdle was the need to maintain consistent specifications.

Custom-designed diffusers for the main dining area’s spotlights reduce glare, creating a soft atmosphere. Every detail mattered, as the designers aimed to foster a harmonious environment where guests could appreciate the restaurant’s humble surroundings. As they walk from the parking area, the goal is for them to feel a seamless blend of tradition and modern comfort, inviting them into an extraordinary dining experience.

Sustainable solutions behind Begawan Biji’s lighting concept

Sustainability played a central role in the design. LED modules throughout the property significantly reduce energy consumption, while fixtures with high lumens per watt ensure maximum brightness with minimal usage. For the outdoor areas, a timed lighting system provides optimal energy efficiency, aligning with natural light and activity levels.
